This is where recent sightings of all wildlife within the St.Ives Estate grounds are posted. It will contain mainly bird sightings but will include insects, bats, plants, fungi and mammals.
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
A male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was seen at Baxter's Pond high up in the tree tops. It's call was heard first, though briefly, which alerted me to it's presence. It's been about 14 years since I last saw one in St.Ives. Needless to say but I was absolutely choughed to see it. IT fed among the highest branches before flying to the back of the opening where it sat for about ten minutes doing nothing. After a short spell of feeding it then flew of at quite a height before being lost in the sky.

Nice shot Mark! I've been looking for LSW in Jumble Hole Clough, nr. Hebden Bridge, for the last 2 Springs now, as they used to breed here until 10 years ago. Sadly, I've had nothing so far. Matt (HBWC)
Cheers Matt,
I missed out last year on LSW in St.Ives after a guy had seen one, though I was convinced I heard it one morning.
Two years ago another guy couldn't stop seeing one in the same spot for about 4 visits! But I never managed to locate it on my visits.
So it was nice to see the male the other week and sublime that I had a newly purchased video camera with me at the time.
regards
Mark
